Jimmy's Poor Effort Prawns

Okay so I haven't blogged in ages and Bryan encouraged me to do so last night and so here goes seeing as I'm not in the mood for work and am tired and just bleh.
Last night we went on a date night, it was Bryan's turn to organise and he read my mind and surprised me with a good plan for dinner up the hill to Kloof where we decided what restaurant to go to. We thought it would be a good idea to try Jimmy's Killer Prawns seeing as it would be a something new. Neither of us are big seafood eaters simply because we haven't tried it and as we love sharing new experiences we wandered inside. The restaurant was pretty nice and cozy in Kloof's old Gran & Gramps shop and the tables had little red lights you could click on when you needed service (like calling an airplane attendant) so that was a cool novelty but the rest was a bit lame. I thought we were ordering food for 2 at R100 but it turned out to be R200 (very sneaky advertising - "Create a table meal for 2 - for R100 each")! Anyway the prawns were okay and the fish was delicious but everything else was dismal. We had fun just cos it was something new and eating with one's fingers is great but it was rather like getting lower level takeaway. I was disappointed with the food and Bryan didn't feel great today after eating everything beside the prawns which I scoffed :P Anyway the american girl I work with (Jessica) has recommended the restaurant Fish at Umhlanga so I think we should give seafood another chance there and then if we still don't like it we know we are just not seafood eaters or at the very least only when it's fresh out the sea and straight on the braai. Nice evening though for just the two of us...and I really like the fact that it's perfectly acceptable to tuck in with no cutlery!
Especially good news is that I got a Woolies chocolate mousse from the petrol station near Westwood on our way home (cheaper than ordering pudding) and they now have Mint Caramel ones too!!

Okay so this isn't the most exciting blog...sorry I've been typing it over about a 2 hour gap on and off whilst helping Jessica hunt for a new home and discussing the advantages of her running yoga lesson so I have no idea anymore if it makes sense and I just can't be bothered to check - it's a Friday people!!! Will makeup for the poor effort prawn blog by writing next time about my new job.

Have a great weekend y'all!

  1. When I designed the menu it definitely was not the intention to use "sneaky advertising" and if it comes across like that I certaily will change it.so if anybody else feels the same I would like to hear form them. I designed the create a table experience to allow people to eat as little or as much as they want to and also to have a different, fun, sociable eating experience. I am also dissappointed to hear that the only items you enjoyed were the Prawns & fish. The quality and taste of our food is what has made us so popular and if what you say is correct I am certainly going to check on this. We are sending an inspector to the store during the course of next week and will let you know the outcome

  2. Hi BadKat, good to hear from you again. If you're interested in experimenting with seafood then there's a really good seafood shop down in Springfield Park, unfortunately I can't remember the name. Coming down the hill from Westville head past Makro, at the last traffic lights before the big interchange (the one with the loopy bridges and stuff) turn left, and then take the first right into the first group of shops, then immediately right, drive under and turn left. Sorry I can't remember the name, but they had the best fish in Durban at really good prices. Their Norwegian salmon was really good, as were their prawns, but they have tons of stuff.

    I don't recommend the sushi in most places in South Africa, especially the stuff in Woolworths, it's just disgusting. Maybe living in Japan has spoilt me, but they have sushi here at the stores and it's brilliant. I don't know what woolies is doing that turns their stuff into a gunky inedible mess.

    I'm a big fan of chocolate mousse, and anything with mint is an instant plus (you can't get mint chocolate in Japan), so I'm going to pick up some when I'm back in S.A. in August!

    Just a quick aside to Jimmy, glad to see a response. It's always disappointing when a franchisee lets down the brand. I hope that you follow through and post your findings here.

  3. Hey I wanted to add my two cents worth;

    I think I know what the "KILLER" in "Jimmy's Killer Prawns" means now... my poor tummy wasn't so good afterwards ;(

    Second cent - my friends Debbie and Theran Knighton-Fitt used to run their own sushi industry called SUSHI STUDIO and that's when I got hooked (pardon the pun... however slight) on sushi - it's amazing stuff! My fondest memory was our Summer Nights experience at church last year, where they had so much leftover sushi and no-one wanted it, that I got about fifty avo maki rolls for free - that was grand!!

  4. @Jimmy - One week, and two days later. Any feedback from Jimmy?

    @Brattex - The avo in my part of Japan sucks :(
